Well-known Lakeland builder Vincent F. Strawbridge was killed early today in an accident on State Road 60 just east of Bonnie Mine Road, the Florida Highway Patrol is reporting.

Strawbridge, 87, was pronounced dead at Lakeland Regional Medical Center about 7:30 a.m. today.

According to FHP reports, Strawbridge was traveling eastbound on S.R. 60 about 3:35 a.m. in the outside lane east of Bonnie Mine Road when the 1994 Cadillac he was driving struck a flatbed tractor trailer carrying wood products that had stopped at an active railroad crossing signal for a passing train.

Strawbridge swerved to the right to avoid a collision but was unsuccessful, the report said. The left front of the Cadillac struck the right rear portion of the trailer, coming to rest facing east, partially in the outside lane and shoulder.

Strawbridge and his passenger, Marion S. Strawbridge, were taken to LRMC where Vincent Strawbridge died and Marion Strawbridge was hospitalized with serious injuries.

The driver of the tractor trailer, James Brock, of Lutz, was not injured. No charges have been filed in the accident.

    RE: Link

Everyone knows at least 1 Strawbridge in Lakeland. Their family's leadership in business and spirituality has been a gift to this community that has span over many generations. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Strawbridge family.

The one thing I found odd about this story, Was WHY would a 87 year old man, and his wife, be out driving the back roads at 3:35 in the morning ?????

Don't most people sleep at that time of the night ?

Well here is what really happened this morning....I will first let you know I am a truck driver and that is why I was out at that time of morning...It all happened right in front of me and I was on the scene until bayflight got there...the car was in front of me going out of Mulberry... he was swerving back and forth in his lane like he was falling asleep. When I noticed the train was crossing the road I started slowing down and his car didn't. He didn't hit his brakes until the last minute right before he hit the back of the flat bed, which was completely stopped with the hazard lights on(as a courtesy for other drivers)waiting on the train... the driver of the car hit his brakes and went to miss the truck at the very last minute.... I got out and saw the driver severely hurt(I then checked for a pulse) his wife had a few cuts on her face (I offered her a blanket to keep warm)..... everything was well lit and the crossing arms were also working... it was a bad deal and god bless the family.
